Lithium Batteries on Superyachts
Navigating the Risks: A Crucial Conversation on Lithium Battery-Powered Devices on Superyachts
On our surveys we are seeing the use of lithium battery-powered devices more and more and although we embrace the power of new technology, it’s crucial to shine a spotlight on a topic that demands our attention: the safety of using and storing lithium battery-powered devices on board a vessel.
While lithium batteries have revolutionised efficiency and performance, understanding the risks is paramount. These energy-dense power sources bring great benefits but also pose challenges such as fire hazards and thermal runaway.
- Fire Risks: The high energy density of lithium batteries increases the potential for overheating and, in extreme cases, combustion. Rigorous safety measures are essential to mitigate these risks.
- Thermal Runaway: Under certain conditions, lithium batteries may experience thermal runaway – a self-sustaining reaction leading to elevated temperatures and potential failure. Proper monitoring and cooling systems are critical to prevent this occurrence.
- Education and Preparedness: Knowledge is our greatest ally. Ensuring our maritime professionals are well-versed in the safe handling, storage, and charging of lithium batteries is a priority.
As a start we would always recommend lithium battery-powered devices should be securely stored in a cool, well-ventilated, and fire-resistant compartment on a superyacht, ensuring they are protected from extreme temperatures and minimising the risk of thermal incidents.
Let’s foster a culture of safety and responsibility.
